CFP: The Hummer: Myths and Consumer Culture [30 Aug 2005]

We are now accepting submissions of papers on issues relating to the Hummer SUV vehicle for a book publication to be released Fall 2006. We are particularly interested in research and writing that explores perspectives on the function of the Hummer as a cultural object. The book is intended as a primary or supplemental text for classes in a multiplicity of areas, including Cultural Studies, Sociology, Business, English, Media Studies, Communications, Urban Policy and Planning, Advertising and Public Policy, as well as a general critique of the Hummer and its current proliferation on contemporary highways and in urban areas, and its circulation and consumption in a global context. The following are suggested topic areas:
  • political economy
  • consumption/ethnography of drivers
  • material culture
  • urban culture/urban geography
  • marketing/advertising and consumer culture
  • literature, film and new media
  • aesthetics
  • resistance – political/environmental
  • global reach

Papers should be no more than 20 pages in length, including endnotes.

Submissions are due August 30, 2005 in the form of abstracts of no more than 300 words to: elacard@aol.com and elgorman@msn.com.
