CFP: CULTURE-GENERATIVE FUNCTION OF GAMES [20 June 2005 / 1 September 2005]
International Conference CULTURE-GENERATIVE FUNCTION OF GAMES. GAME AS A MEDIUM, TEXT AND RITUAL 19 and 20 November 2005, Poznan, Poland
In his famous book Homo Ludens, Johan Huizinga says that the play pre-exists culture, accompanies it and infiltrates it from the very beginning. Recalling his words as the motto of our conference, we would like not only to underline his impact on the creation of a discipline which by the end of the 20th century gained the name of ludology, but also to emphasise the way Huizinga's thought points a direction of developing game research standards and methodologies.
Game, as a fresh issue in the scope of academic research, requires an initiation of attempts aimed at creating a unified terminology, determining the range of studies that would enable a full analysis of the phenomenon, and answering a number of important questions, including the following ones:
What was the significance of games in human lives until the present? Have games already developed a stable position in education? What have been the uses of games and what are they going to be like in the 21st century? Is it possible and justified to create a separate methodology for studying games? Can ludology evolve only on the basis of theories developed by humanities and social sciences?
We address those questions to linguists, language teachers, literary critics, historians, philosophers, anthropologists, culture theoreticians, sociologists, psychologists, pedagogues and reresentatives of sciences. The suggested discussion and contribution topics are as follows:
Language and communication games in the process of teaching a foreign language, pedagogy and education of young children Games as a tool of e-learning Linguistic and cultural borrowings in games. Lanugage as a game coponent Interactive narratives: Communication in computer games and RPG From pre-history to cyberspace: games in the human history Position of games in the contemporary culture Evolution of social games Literary inspirations of games Game psychology Social phenomena in games Modern technologies as game tools Games and the problem of violenc! e Image of games in media and in the public opinion Methods of game research.
