CFP: Making Music, Making Meaning [1 Sept 2004]

Making Music, Making Meaning
13th Biennial Conference of the International Association for the Study
of Popular Music (IASPM)
July 25-30, 2005 Rome, Italy

The Program Committee of IASPM invites individual or panel proposals on the general theme of “Making Music, Making Meaning” for the July 2005 conference to be held in Rome. While focusing on meaning as a shared initial concept, the conference will be organized by five parallel streams, as follows:
  • Mapping Meaning (convenor Geoff Stahl) [geoffs@cam.org]
  • Reading Meaning (convenor Claire Levy) [levy@cablebg.net]
  • Voicing Meaning (convenor Franco Fabbri) [prof.fabbri@fastwebnet.it]
  • Visualizing Meaning (convenor Marion Leonard) [marionl@liverpool.ac.uk]
  • Mediating Meaning (convenor Shuhei Hosokawa) [hosokawa@nichibun.ac.jp]

Proposals should be sent by email to: iaspm-2005@iaspm.net

They should include author’s name, institutional affiliation (if any), post and email addresses, paper or panel title, and abstract of no more than 300 word suitable for publication on the conference website if accepted. Please also specify the intended stream and attach your submissions as files with the title “authorsname.rtf”.

The conference's official language is English, and paper proposals should be submitted in English. However, the Program Committee will endeavour (depending on submitted proposals) to have at least one of the parallel sessions, every day, arranged so that other languages can be used, without simultaneous translation. The location of the conference and its international character suggest that there might be a number of speakers and attendants wishing to use languages like French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, or others. The Program Committee's aim is not to create a linguistic ghetto for non-English speakers, but to encourage participants who speak more than one language (including mother-tongue English speakers) to use their abilities in order to develop a better knowledge of various national approaches to popular music studies, which are obviously language-dependent. Those either wishing (as their first choice) or accepting to deliver their paper in a multilingual session should indicate in their proposal the intended language (English of course is also welcome), and which other languages they understand.

Deadline for submissions is Sept 1, 2004; authors will be notified of the Program Committee’s decisions by January 1, 2005.

Whoever wins the US election a new cultural alignment is necessary for the survival of the planet. A radically different worldview can liberate an alternative culture based on the leadership of women. The thread of the gift

Come to Las Vegas to discuss the processes and values of the gift economy with women from many countries: Heidi Gottner Abendroth (Germany), Yvette Abrahams (South Africa), Paula Gunn Allen (USA), Peggy Antrobus (Barbados), Jeanette Armstrong (Canada), Madu Auditore (Italy), Chato Basa (Phillippines/Italy), Marta Benavides (El Salvador), Dotttie Chamblin (USA), Kristin Dawkins (USA), Leslene Della Madre (USA), Brackin Firecracker (USA), Tracy Gary (USA), Ana Isla (Peru/Canada), Maria Jimenez (USA), Karrina Kailo (Finland), Corinne Kumar (India/Tunisia), Graziela Lomonte (Costa Rica), Paola Melchiori (Italy), Angela Miles (Canada), Vicki Noble (USA), Sizani Ngubane (South Africa), Susan Petrilli (Australia/Italy), Vandana Shiva (India), Claudia Von-Werlhof (Austria), Genevieve Vaughan (USA/Italy), Shelly Vendiola (USA), Frieda Werden (USA/Canada).
