CFP: Canadian Association for Cultural Studies (CACS) [December 1, 2002]
Inaugural Annual Meeting Canadian Association for Cultural Studies (CACS) McMaster University, Hamilton, Canada January 31 - February 1, 2003
Significant steps have recently been made toward the establishment of an association devoted to cultural studies in Canada. This association will allow scholars and cultural workers to learn about one another's work and share their respective insights, enhancing and revitalizing cultural, social and political inquiry in Canada. We are open to supporting activities in all geographical foci of cultural studies in addition to those grounded in the analysis of Canadian topics. We also encourage the expression of a wide-range of views and opinions, with the aim of developing a flexible and inclusive vision of what constitutes cultural studies, one that reflects multiple disciplinary, interdisciplinary, non-disciplinary and non-institutional approaches.
We invite proposals for presentations for an event to be held at the downtown campus of McMaster University in Hamilton. While contributions on any topic relevant to cultural studies are invited, we are particularly interested in presentations that deal with topics such as: cultural studies and political activism; citizenship; land rights; indigenous movements and globalization; cultural studies in/and the world; the university and globalization; legal cultural studies; culture and politics after the state; cultural studies and pedagogy; social movements and social justice; theorizing crisis; the problems of "cultural" capitalism; media studies; and the culture(s) of neoliberalism. We invite proposals for papers, panels, roundtable discussions and alternate forms of presentation such as short 5 minute papers or presentations, multimedia presentations, performances, etc. We are especially interested in alternative forms of presentation and will make every effort to support these alternatives.
This event will also be the occasion for the first Annual General Meeting of the Canadian Association of Cultural Studies. At this meeting, we will collectively decide on the aims and executive structure of the organization and elect an executive for the year ahead. A draft of the aims, executive structure and constitution of the organization will be circulated in advance on the Association's listserv (Details on joining the CACS listserv can be found at: (http://mailman.mcmaster.ca/mailman/listinfo/ccsa_list)
In addition to the exchange of academic papers, and in cooperation with local arts organizations and cultural producers, events are being planned that will bring participants into some of Hamilton's underused downtown spaces. Details will be announced in the near future, as will details of the event's plenary session.
Registration will be free for students, community members, sessional workers, and postdocs. For full-time faculty, registration is $20; this fee will be put towards the creation of a CACS travel fund. All participants need to be paid members of the CACS by January 15, 2003.

Call for Nominations: Eli Köngas-Maranda Prize
The Women's Section of the AFS requests submissions for the EKM Prizes. The Elli Kongas-Maranda Prize is awarded annually for two outstanding works on women's traditional, vernacular, or local culture and/or for work on feminist theory and folklore. The content of the nominations must focus on some aspect of women's folklore. The award goes to the producer/author of an exemplary product (publication, film, video, exhibit, exhibit catalogue, recording, etc.) that can inspire further work in the field of women's folklore.
There are two prize categories for this award, a Student Prize ($100) and a Non-student/Professional Prize ($250). The deadline for the professional prize has passed; however, we are still accepting papers for the student prize.
The Student Prize The student nomination must have been presented at the 2000 or 2001 AFS annual meeting and must be the paper as it was delivered, rather than an edited version after the presentation. If you attended the 2001 AFS meeting and heard a great student presentation, please encourage that person to submit the paper for consideration. Students should submit three copies of their delivered presentation to the prize committee chair (Elisabeth Nixon) no later than 10 a.m. on Thursday of the AFS meeting (submit papers to Elisabeth Nixon at the conference hotel registration desk). Earlier submissions are strongly encouraged, even electronic submissions as attachments, to the address below.
